Respecting Their Choices”

Understanding Dogs from the Inside Out

This talk explores what it means to see dogs as sentient beings and the ethical responsibility that follows when we take that seriously. If we accept that dogs have emotional lives, then those experiences matter and that may ask more of us than we expect, especially when it is inconvenient or uncomfortable.

We will look at emotions not as problems to solve, but as meaningful experiences that shape how dogs feel about their world. Particular attention will be given to “big emotions”, those moments when dogs are finding things difficult, feeling overwhelmed or highly aroused, because these are often the times that ask the most of us. Dogs are always communicating, inviting us to look beyond the surface and consider what lies underneath. It is here that our ethical responsibility feels most present, calling for observation, thoughtfulness and respect.

The talk will also reflect on the role of agency, choice, safety and context in everyday life and how cumulative stress and environmental factors can either support or undermine emotional well-being. Emotional needs and agency are not optional extras: they are central to ethical practice.

It closes with a reflection on listening more carefully to dogs. Recognising their inner lives, respecting their choices and allowing ethics to guide how we live together.

   About Marina Gates Fleming
       Expand

After living in London and working in the City for many years, Marina is now based near Brussels, Belgium. And if so, how?

In this talk, I will share my practical experience and specific cases as a dog walker working in highly challenging conditions, and invite discussion on how we can better support dogs and their humans in challenging environments.

   About Neta Vasilyeva
       Expand

I am a dog behaviour specialist based in Israel, working with families of sensitive dogs through a science-based and ethical approach. My forever goal is to improve dogs’ welfare, including both their physical and mental state.

My special interest is in musculoskeletal health, appropriate physical activity, and pain. In 2023, I became a certified foundational posture analyst through Galen Myotherapy, and I integrate this into my work – helping families make better choices around equipment, home environment, walking routines, and recognising signs of physical discomfort.

Alongside this, I spent nearly four years working as a dog walker in Tel Aviv – one of the most dog-dense cities in the world – hired strictly as a walker, not a behaviour professional.

Within that limitation, I focused on improving dogs’ wellbeing through walks alone.

This work comes with clear constraints. Many urban environments like Tel Aviv are dense, noisy, and overstimulating, with constant exposure to people, vehicles, and other dogs. In these conditions, the principles of healthy walking – familiar to every PDTE member – are often difficult to fully apply.

  Liz Drury

Ethical dog trainer who specialises in working with shelter dogs, community dogs, and adopted dogs from Greece

“Community Feels – the secret lives of community dogs in Greece”

My presentation introduces the lives of community dogs in Greece – not as a problem in the community, but as individuals living in a community, with rich lives, choices, thoughts and feelings. As you become closely acquainted with some of my closest friends, I hope to challenge some beliefs even within the professional community about what dogs need, how to meet their needs, and what is important to them. And importantly from the perspective of dog professionals and guardians, how can we use this knowledge to help our own dogs live happier lives? The dogs don’t lie, and they tell us what they like and what they don’t!

I will introduce case studies from my community work that look at how we can problem solve when there are welfare issues, or quite severe conflict in the community between dogs, and between people and dogs. What causes the conflict? Whose emotions, and which emotions are we considering? How are they expressed?

You might see behaviours or anecdotes you have never seen before, fascinating scenarios that are almost hard to believe, but they just heighten our respect for these animals, their intelligence and their abilities.

   About Liz Drury
       Expand

British-Australian by background, Liz has lived and worked in Serbia and Greece for the past six years, where she runs her registered business, Ethos Dog, based in Argos in the Peloponnese.
