WHAT IS DOG SOCIAL WALKS?

Social walks are organised walks for dogs and their care-takers under the supervision of a dog behaviourist, during which dog learns to respond adequately and calmly to the presence of other dogs while enjoying a walk. Meanwhile his care-taker learns to organise walks and to cooperate with the dog when other dogs are around, as well as to react correctly if the dog shows signs of positive or negative stress, for example, pulling on the leash, barking or showing disrespectful, aggressive behaviour towards other dogs, such as jumping on or pushing other dogs to the ground.

It’s a great practice in a safe environment where:

  • First of all, the dog can realise and learn that it is not necessary to communicate, sniff and play with every dog in front of you, but rather by maintaining a neutral environment, each one should sniff, enjoy, play with his care-taker, etc.
  • Secondly, to politely communicate, play and walk together with other dogs if all dogs feel comfortable enough to make contact.

WHICH DOGS WILL BENEFIT FROM SOCIAL WALKS?

Many dogs have a problem with their ability to form a polite and correct communication with other dogs. Other dogs get too happy not being able to control their emotions, so they start to growl and bark just to get to the other dog faster. While others become reactive or even aggressive if another dog approaches him. Then another part of dogs are afraid of unfamiliar dogs or even just to hear barking.

In all these cases there is one thing in common: dog's previous experience or the lack of experience – dog does not know how to communicate with other dogs or how to calmly pass other dogs on the street without paying too much attention and stress-based behavioural reactions.

Therefore, social walks will be useful if your dog:

  • gets too active/excited, cannot control his emotions in the presence of other dogs (he barks, pulls on the leash, runs and jumps on other dogs as if inviting them to play);
  • gets reactive when approaching another dog or even just seeing him from a distance (your dog barks, pulls on the leash, does not listen to your commands);
  • gets aggressive if other dog comes too close (attempts to attack or attacks him by biting);
  • is afraid of unfamiliar dogs or even just the sound of dog’s barking.

WHY ARE SOCIAL WALKS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PROFESSIONAL TRAINER NECESSARY?

The trainer leads the walks by controlling that everyone feels safe and walks are pleasant and psychologically easy for all participants – adjusting the distance between dogs, commenting and analysing dog’s behavior, as well as setting various tasks during the walk to calm and motivate dogs to sniff around or cooperate with their care-taker.

At the end of each walk the trainer discusses with care-takers how dogs did on the walk and analyses each one – their improvements are seen in each dog's behavior.
